A Whale of an Adventure – 6/8/24 & 6/9/24 Whale Watching Cruises

On 6/8/ 24, the weather was breathtaking, with no clouds and perfect visibility as we set out on our Long Island Whale & Seal Watching journey. The marshlands were teeming with life, and we were treated to the sight of countless snowy egrets and great egrets, their white feathers glistening in the sunlight. Ospreys were spotted busily bringing materials to their nests while double-crested cormorants and common terns flew overhead. We also caught glimpses of various types of gulls. As we made our way out to the ocean, the excitement mounted, and we were soon rewarded with the sight of not one but two humpback whales. The closer of the two put on a brief show, its unique fluke flipping upwards as it dove deep into the water and even treating us to a sudden breach. In addition to these majestic creatures, we were joined by multiple small pods of approximately 25 inshore bottlenose dolphins. On 6/9/24, Captain Pete reports the watching adventure began with a spectacular display of ospreys soaring over the marshland, accompanied by great egrets, snowy egrets, and a diverse group of common terns plunging from remarkable heights of over 20 feet to catch their prey, with double-crested cormorants and various types of gulls adding to the scenery. As we continued our journey, we had the privilege of witnessing two stunning humpback whales, both of which captivated passengers and crew aboard the Pearl with their pectoral fin slapping, and one of them even showcased its impressive fluke. To top it all off, we were joined by over 50 inshore bottlenose dolphins effortlessly riding alongside the humpback whales.

Thanks to Dana Trojca for the beautiful photos. Also, a big thank you to the New York Marine Rescue Center for their amazing volunteers!
